Kumarakom bird sanctuary is home to a score of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, Egret, Darter, Heron and Teal. Local birds like the Water Fowl, Cuckoo, Owl and Water Hen and other common varieties like the Woodpecker, Sky Lark, Crane and Parrots can also be spotted here. 91 species of local and 50 species of migratory birds are found in this region. The best time to watch local birds is June-August and the best time for to watch migratory birds is November-February.

This is an eight hour trip between Kollam and Alappuzha and also is the longest backwater cruise in Kerala. In this trip the entire backwater areas are covered as such the leisure time is less. Half the journey time will be completed cruising and on the second day you would reach Kollam. Entry to house boats is restricted to some areas due to insufficient space within the canals. Alumkadavu is the destination and it is near Kollam (approx.21 kms). This one way backwater cruise's major attractions are paddy fields coir village, Karumadikuttan, Kumarakodi, Matha Amrithamanadha Mayi Ashram at Vallikavu. The same trip can be hired for 2 days and 2 Nights as well, and then you can enjoy the trip to the maximum.
